This nail is far smaller than Hornet’s needle, or the weapons of the Moss Knights. Or perhaps they died at the hands of Mosskin - maybe one of the Moss Knights that patrol the nearby areas.īut neither of these explains their position when we first see them. They’re leaned against a patterned rock, with a nail embedded in what would’ve been their body prior to their death. They lie in the same clearing she tries to kill Ghost in, after all. The simplest answer is that Hornet happened to them. Is the name just metaphorical, meaning I’m making a big deal over nothing?Īnd finally, what happened to them? How, exactly, did they die? So did they get the cloak directly from some group of moths, especially considering the implications of either hypothetical method for the cloak’s creation? Did they pick it up from some fallen traveler? Was it a gift from someone? And if this cloak is truly made from the wings - or wing feathers, as the moths we see do appear somewhat feathery - of moths, it means either that moths were killed and their wings used in order to make the cloak, or the more pleasant alternative, that the cloak was made from wing feathers that the moths shed. How did they obtain the Mothwing Cloak? The main group of moths we know of is the tribe created by the Radiance, but it’s likely there are others outside Hallownest. (While this would raise the question of “why?”, she does give the Ghost an entire charm, so she’s certainly not averse to helping vessels.) In this scenario, considering their proximity to Unn’s residence, she might have intervened at some point to aid them. The other possibility is that they never actually left Hallownest, and either died while attempting to leave, or simply decided to stay instead, survived in Hallownest for awhile, and then died. The other is through Greenpath, and not too far from the spot this vessel wound up in, either. One is through the King’s Pass, the route our knight takes. There are two paths that lead to the Howling Cliffs, after all. How did they get so far from the Abyss? The most likely answer is, the same way our knight did having found a way out of Hallownest and traveled the wilderness beyond before returning. (Aaaand several paragraphs in, that’s what this post is about!) And of all the fallen vessels, they raise the most questions. It is from them that we acquire the first movement ability, through an item called the “Mothwing Cloak”. Unlike almost all the others, who are down at the bottom of the world, we find them here, in Greenpath - the second area for most players. This is the first vessel we see in-game that isn’t our knight. There’s our own little Ghost, the only one still living (aside from the Hollow Knight), as far as we know. There’s the Broken Vessel in the Ancient Basin (who’s actually also something of a mystery), and a few vessels in Deepnest, who were lured into Nosk’s lair. There’s the Hollow Knight, the one who was chosen to instead endure a fate worse than death. The Pale King created a lot of vessels, but after he locked them away in the Abyss, very few made it out. So I’ve been thinking about this for a few days.
