Primarily having a mechanical design background, I have also done some electrical, piping and civil engineering site/survey related work, so consider myself rather well rounded with respect to what CAD software is best served to the task at hand and the need to import/export to take advantage of each of there respective strengths. Interestingly, I took an advance modeling course in AGI32 (photmetric software) back in 2005, which I was told uses the same rendering engine as CA. Suffice to say, I have an engineering background spanning 30 years. AutoCAD, Microstation, ArchiCAD), from a personal and proffessional perspective, and am aware of the learning curve, know the limitations of each, and the intuitiveness which makes them either a joy to use, or laborsome. Using CAD since 1998 (Unigraphics, Solid Edge, Solid Works, AutoMAP, Mechanical Desktop i.e. It is your choice to make, just make it with your eyes open, with a willingness to take responsibility for those outcomes. Maybe its just me but I like my tools to work smoothly and reliably and generally speaking antique software tools generally do not do well outside of the hardware and operating systems they were designed to operate in.

Versions 9,10 and 11 run in Windows XP well but 9, will not run at all in W7, and 10 and 11 suffer reliability issues in Windows 7. I would advise nothing older than Version 12 IMHO, it runs well in Windows XP and 7 for instance. You can buy older versions of Chief Architect legally that will run on today's PC's and Mac's and I encourage you to do so. Old software, if significant is for Technology Museums along with the hardware and operating systems that they ran in. I consider Chief Architect Inc software a bargain but I am also aware that I am not you which is as it should be. Microsoft recently ceased support of Windows 2000, Windows XP is slated for the software bone yard in the next few years.
I have friends who own licenses of Chief Architect Version 5 that they no longer use for instance, you could buy one of those licenses but technically speaking that would only buy you a piece of paper and some old CRDOM installation discs and a hardware lock designed to work in Windows 98 which all: Microsoft, Chief Inc and Sentinel no longer support.

I support and run Versions 9-14 on Windows XP x32 and Windows 7 圆4 as well as Home Designer versions 7-2012 on the same PC. Versions 4-8 were designed/developed to run within Windows 95-2000 and will not reliably run on modern PC's and operating systems. Is there a market out there where the older software is available for purchase?
My question is, if an older version of CA 6.0 or newer is out there, what would be a fair market price? Would I be better off buying a newer BH&G version, keeping in mind I want the features mentioned above (export/build estimates by area)? Is the $500 +/- version similar enough to the 4.0 as alluded to in another post with the primary differnece being the price tag? (Unless you spring for the software going for around $500, which is a bit steep) With that being said, I've looked at the various DIY offerings available under the BH&G, and each seemed to have stripped out some of the features 4.0 had, such as exporting to DXF and partial building spreadsheet estimating. Having access to various CAD packages including AutoCAD and Solid Works, I have found I would rather not do any architectural design there for obvious reasons, but both 3.0 and 4.0 3DHA have the ability to export to DXF so I can do detailing in either of these alternate CAD platforms. I have since traced the roots of this software I've grown to love from Broderbund, back to CA after working with a builder years ago that I believe was using CA 6.0. I upgraded to 4.0 and then to 5.0 when I discovered this last version was based on something other than the familiar interface I had found so intuitive. My first exposure to CA was through 3D Home Architect 3.0 years ago.
